The Great North Walk |
WHAT'S ON THIS PAGE:
INTRODUCTION:
This page is a record of my attempts at The Great North Walk from Newcastle to Sydney. Included here will be something of a journal (from memory) and photos of my trips. Though I have travelled through the area on numerous occasions, I have not generally kept track notes or journals until recently, so accounts will be sparse.
The Great North Walk is a bush walking track from Newcastle to Sydney or Sydney to Newcastle. The walk can be attempted over a period of about 2 weeks or in shorter installments (my preferred option).
THE YUELARBAH TRACK:
The Yuelarbah Track is the first section of The Great North Walk in the Newcastle to Sydney direction. This section is a 25km day walk from Queens Wharf in Newcastle to the Teralba Railway Station.
The walk takes in King Edward Park, the Newcastle coastline, Glenrock State Recreation Area, the urban bushland of the suburbs and the Lake Macquarie foreshore around to the Five Islands. It's a fairly easy section of the walk, though more difficult in hot times.
THE WATAGAN TRACK:
This section of The Great North Walk goes for some 61km and is best done over three days. There are a number of easy sections, but these are balanced by the more difficult mountainous areas of the Awaba, Heaton, Corrabare and Watagan State Forests.
This section begins (in the Newcastle to Sydney direction) at the Teralba Railway Station.
THE DISCOVERY KIT:
There is an excellent kit available which describes each section of the walk in great detail, including information on where to stay and how to travel. The kit is known as the 'Discovery Kit.' Detailed maps of each section are also included in the kit. The kits are available from all good camping stores, etc.
