WHAT'S ON THIS PAGE:
INTRODUCTION:
Carnarvon National Park protects an area of 3 000 square kilometres. The park is made up of several sections including Carnarvon Gorge, Mt Moffat, Salvator Rosa, Ka Ka Mundi and Moolayember sections.
CAMPING:
Big Bend Camping Ground:
The camping ground is a walk in area at the end of Carnarvon Gorge, some 10km from the park's headquarters. It is the only camping area in this region of the gorge.
Park Headquarters:
At the park's headquarters is a large camping area.
WALKING:
Carnarvon Gorge Walk:
The Carnarvon Gorge Walk is a 10km walk up through the gorge.
About 3.6km into the walk is a detour into Violet Gorge and the Moss Gardens.
About 5km into the walk is Wards Canyon. At the end of the canyon are the Upper Aljon Falls and what is known as the Freezing Chamber, an area that receives little by way of natural light.
About 5.5km into the walk is the Art Gallery. The Art Gallery is a large area of Aboriginal art with over 2000 separate etchings and stencils along a 62m wall. The area is now protected by a boardwalk ensuring the future survival of the art.
Toward the end of the gorge is Cathedral Cave.
The Big Bend camping ground is located at the end of the gorge.
Boolimba Bluff:
Boolimba Bluff can be reached after a 3.2km climb from the park's headquarters at Carnarvon Gorge.
