INTRODUCTION:

Fraser Island is located in the Coral Sea, is 124km long and 22km wide at it's widest point. It is about 200km north of Queensland's capital, Brisbane. It is the largest sand island in the world, with a beach that is about 75 miles long.

The island is made up of areas of sand dunes, swamp, heath, mangrove and rainforest. There are over 100 lakes on Fraser Island.

Fraser Island is home to the purest Dingo strain remaining in Australia. The island is also home to a wide range of Australian native species, including Wallabies, Echidnas and Possums. There are over 260 species of birds represented on Fraser Island.

Fraser Island is 4WD country only as all the roads are made of sand, of which there are some 3000km of.

Access to Fraser Island is via the barge from Inskip Point of Hervey Bay on the Queensland mainland. Entrance and camping permits apply to Fraser Island.

CAMPING:

Camping permits are required for Fraser Island.

 

Central Station:

Central Station is a picnic area that has a small museum, plus a camping area. A number of walks begin from this location.
